Shalane Flanagan Officially Teaming with KIMbia Athletics

Yes, that Shalane Flanagan.

With most management partnerships being struck when an athlete is coming out of college, it’s almost unheard of for an agency to add an athlete so accomplished at the international level, right in the prime of her career. Yet we are pleased to be able to welcome Shalane Flanagan — she of two current American records, an Olympic Bronze Medal, a New York City Marathon Runner-Up Finish, and countless US Championships — to the KIMbia Athletics family. Having had the opportunity to work closely with Flanagan since she joined KIMbia’s OTC athletes under the guidance of Jerry Schumacher — and well as through her co-starring contribution to last fall’s Rookies Vs the World — our respective teams developed a mutual respect and admiration for each other. Now, we will have the opportunity to directly contribute to a continued success that is mutual as well.

“I have big goals and dreams,” Flanagan explained, “And I believe that with KIMbia’s help and support I have a chance to reach them.” Combining a long tradition of world class athletes such as world champion and world record holder Daniel Komen; world champion, Olympic silver medalist, and former world record holder Elana Meyer; and, Chicago and London Marathon champion Evans Rutto, with a demonstrated desire to better connect those athletes with the public, KIMbia seemed like an natural home for Flanagan. As KIMbia director Tom Ratcliffe put it, “Shalane combines world class ability and uncompromising tenacity with a wonderful personality, so we look forward to a long and successful alliance.”

Shalane has been capably represented by her husband Steve Edwards since 2008, and Steve will continue to work with Ratcliffe in representing Shalane. “KIMbia has a tremendous reputation and years of experience,” Edwards said. “Shalane and I are very excited to be joining the KIMbia family.” Considering Edwards’ experience and his trademark sense of humor, that excitement goes both ways.

Flanagan competes tonight in Stockholm in a 3000m featuring World Record Holder Meseret Defar, and will then turn her attention to leading the US senior women’s team into the 2011 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.
