Frerichs flies to American record in Monaco

Courtney Frerichs produced a stunning performance at the Monaco Diamond League tonight, the 25-year-old clocking an American record of 9:00.85 to finish second behind Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech, who set a world record of 8:44.32.

Frerichs’ run took three seconds off her previous best and brought her home four seconds clear of Kenya’s Hyvin Kiyeng and five seconds clear of world champion Emma Coburn.

Colleen Quigley impressed after returning from recent injury problems, the Bowerman Track Club athlete finishing 12th in 9:20.99.

Later in the night, Evan Jager produced another brave attempt at the eight-minute barrier, the Bowerman Track Club athlete coming home second in 8:01.02. The race was won by Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali in 7:58.15.
