Frerichs claims historic Olympic silver

Courtney Frerichs produced the race of her life on Wednesday night to claim a historic silver medal in the 3000m steeplechase at the Tokyo Olympics.

The 28-year-old ran a fearless race, taking command with a little under a mile to run and putting her rivals to the sword, and only Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai was able to stay in touch. Chemutai went past on the final lap but Frerichs hung on with huge bravery to claim the biggest medal of her career, clocking 9:04.79 behind Chemutai’s 9:01.45.

“My strength as a runner is my strength,” Frerichs said. “It’s not leaving it down to the foot speed at the end.”

“I honestly just felt so confident with how my training’s been going. And I just I felt like it was going to be the right thing to do. And Shalane [Flanagan] told me going into it that if I made that move, I’d have no regrets, even if it meant coming up short. So I really tried to lean into that.

“It was surreal as everything I ever dreamed about,” she said of the moment she crossed the line. “It’s been a long journey to the starting line.”
