Fisher and Schweizer make it a double for Tokyo

On the final day of the US Olympic Trials in Eugene, Grant Fisher assured himself a place in the 5000m in Tokyo with a second-place finish behind Paul Chelimo. Fisher had already secured qualification in the 10,000 but the Bowerman Track Club athlete opened up the chance to double with his runner-up finish in 13:27.01.

Henry Wynne and Josh Thompson just missed out in the men’s 1500, the pair finishing 5th and 6th respectively in 3:37.70 and 3:37.73.

On the penultimate day on Saturday, Karissa Schweizer also ensured she can double up in Tokyo, finishing second in the 10,000m in oppressive heat in 31:16.52. Teammate Elise Cranny just missed out on making the team by finishing fourth in 31:35.22, but she will be in Tokyo in the 5000m. Fiona O’Keeffe finished 20th in 33:03.09.

On Friday Sean McGorty finished seventh in the 3000m steeplechase final, coming up five seconds shy of a top-three finish and a place on the plane to Tokyo.

Well done to all the athletes who gave it their very best shot.
