Brussels 5000 Makes Jager US #8

13:02 — achingly close to a sub-13:00 mark, long the biggest badge of honor for 5000m runners. Instead, American steeplechase record holder Evan Jager will take home from Brussels the following door prizes:

A 12.20 second personal best. A #8 ranking all-time among Americans. A finish ahead of 12:48-man Isaiah Koech.

Coming eighth — even in a Diamond League field — may not totally satisfy an athlete in the mix for world-level medals, but Jager clearly acquitted himself well in his final track race of the 2013 season. Not only did he seem to meet his main definition of success from pre-race reflection, but he was in the mix with the entire field, right up until the final positions began getting sorted out with 200m to go. Even at the top of the homestretch Jager was in range for a Top 5 finish — and in a race that isn’t even his specialty.

Jager will finish up his 2013 campaign at the Nissan NYRR Fifth Avenue Mile on September 22nd.
